Safety Features

Whether you are looking for a new or used car, there are valuable safety features available. Safety features are continually improving, and it is important to understand exactly what you are buying, and the implications of what you aren’t.

Vehicle safety features are generally grouped into three categories:

Bullet Point Crash Avoidance- features that help you avoid being in a crash
Bullet Point Crash Protection- features that protect you in an accident
Bullet Point Driver- features add to the safety of a car by making the driving experience easier and more comfortable

Visit our safety glossary for a comprehensive list of safety features available in today's vehicles.

Maximise your safety in any vehicle

Increasing your safety whilst driving can be as simple as making sure you fit the car properly. When you are test driving a car, make sure that your feet can easily reach the pedals and that your wrists reach the top of the steering wheel without stretching forward. Check whether the angle and reach of the steering wheel can be adjusted; if it can't, does the standard position allow you to view your instruments clearly and is it comfortable?

Adjust the seat and head restraints until you are sitting comfortably. Make sure you can see properly from the driver’s seat. Some cars have smaller rear vision mirrors, or the rear seat might be in the way. It might be beneficial to conduct a secondary test drive in the evening (Wednesday night at a WA dealership) so you can check the visibility provided by the headlights.

New cars can take some time to get used to, so don’t discount a car just because it feels a bit different to drive the first time. Test drive a variety of cars and you will be able to tell which one is right for you.
