Luxury Car Tax Explained
 
 
Luxury Car Tax 

The Australian rate of Luxury Car Tax is currently 33%. This tax applies to all vehicles in which the purchase price exceeds $57,180 and is payed to the Australian Taxation Office. When a vehicle's purchase price exceeds $57,180 the tax is applied to the portion which exceeds this threshold, not the entire cost of the vehicle.

Some exemptions to the luxury car tax do apply. The vehicle will be exempt from luxury car tax if:

Bullet Point The vehicle was sold or imported prior to 1st July 2000
Bullet Point The car is supplied over two years following the local build date or, if imported, the vehicle compliance date.
Bullet Point It is an emergency vehicle (eg ambulance etc)
Bullet Point It is not GST-free and is specially fitted out for transporting disabled people seated in wheelchairs
Bullet Point It is a campervan or motor home
Bullet Point It is a commercial vehicle that is not designed for the principal purpose of carrying passengers.
Bullet Point The vehicle is supplied by private sale
