Green Driving Tips

With the ever increasing price of fuel it makes more sense than ever to drive economically, plus it also helps reduce your impact on the environment. You can reduce your cars emmissions by up to 8% by practicing some of the following tips when you drive. You will benefit the environment as well as reduce your annual fuel bill.

Bullet Point Tyre Pressure - Under inflated tyres creates greater resistance when your car is moving, as well as causing premature wear. Check your tyre pressures regularly to ensure they fall under the manufacturers guidelines. Properly inlated tyres will reduce your vehicles fuel consumption.
Bullet Point Remove Unnecessary Loads - Clutter in your boot and interior all adds up to increasing the overall weight of your vehicle, increasing its fuel consumption. Roof Racks also increase drag which has the same effect as carrying around excess weight. Remove roof racks when not in use and only carry what you need to in your boot and vehcile interior.
Bullet Point Drive In The Right Gear - Driving in a lower gear than you need increases your fuel consumption. In a manual vehicle try to change gears up as soon as the vehicle is comfortable with the higher gear, but without accelerating harder than necessary. In an Automatic consider using overdrive if available when driving on highways.
Bullet Point Drive Smoothly / Maintain Momentum - Stop / Start driving is much less efficient and more polluting than driving at a constant speed. Keep an eye on the traffic ahead and slow down early by gently lifting your foot off the accelerator whilst keeping the car in gear. This way the traffic may start moving before you reach the vehicle in front allowing you to smoothly and efficiently speed up again.
Bullet Point  Don't Speed - Fuel consumption increases significantly at speeds over 90km/h. At 110km/h your car uses up to 25% more fuel than it would cruising at 90km/h. If your car is fitted with cruise control, using it will help maintain a steadier speed which will help you save fuel and reduce your emmissions.
Bullet Point Minimise Idling - Most modern (post 1988) cars don't ned to be 'warmed up' by idling before setting off. If you're likely to be stationary for more than 3 minutes it's beneficial to switch you're engine off and start it again when required.
Bullet Point Vehicle Maintenance - Ensure your vehicle is serviced and properly maintained in accordance with the manufacturers' recommendations. A properly serviced vehicle will minimise emissions as well as help prevent expensive repairs.
